NaNoWriMo

I am just letting everyone know that I will be a participant in this year’s NaNoWriMo.

If you are unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo is I will tell you:

NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. Each year participants in NaNoWriMo start writing a novel at 12:01am November 1st and finish the novel by midnight on the last day of the month. The novel must be 175 pages long or 50,000 words. Participants upload their novels to the NaNoWriMo web site for an official word count before the end of the contest, and if there are 50k words you are a winner. There really aren’t any prizes except for bragging rights.

Even though the emphasis is on quantity not quality in this contest some submitted NaNoWriMo novels have been published, even a New York Times Best Seller! You can see the list here.

So I am writing because I want to be able to say that I wrote a novel in 30 days, and all I got was a certificate and a web badge. Also, because I think it will be fun to write and keep writing without having to pay attention to plot, characters, or anything…just write.

If you too are going to participate in this year’s NaNoWriMo you can stop by my profile here. I will be posting my progress here on The Long Downward Spiral.

Cheers,

Les

How do they know you didn't write it beforehand?

If you do, then you do. Since there are no real prizes it kind of defeats the purpose of cheating. I am sure people do cheat, but the only reward is having the feeling of acomplishment, so if you cheat you would just rob yourself of the only reward. Kinda dumb.

I think I could write a novel in 30 days. I think it would be really bizarre and not make sense, but I could write it.

I would cheat to win.

No one else would know, so I could still brag.

Also, if it was a quality novel, this nanowrimo thing would be a good chance to call attention to yourself if you were unpublished/unknown.

Ahh, I remember seeing a whole bunch of blogs with the percentage meter on their blogs. Many years it's been since I blogged, you see. Do it, Les, and we'll see what happens, won't we?

I plan on it. We will see what happens. It will be a mess, and will probably be unreadable but it will be finished. Thats the big goal for me.

I feel like I'm seeing a lot more bloggers than usual this year committing to NaNoWriMo. The resulting social, emotional, and psychological carnage should be immense. That said, I look forward to your finished product! Are you going to be posting each day's results on TLDS as you go?

Yes I will be doing daily updates on the NaNoWriMo site, and regular updates here including my synopsis.
